This article is the first in an educational series offered by MySQL AB aimed towards providing the reader with valuable insight into the MySQL database server. Although future articles will delve into some of the more complicated topics surrounding MySQL, including replication, ODBC and optimization, it was thought to be prudent if the first tutorial started, well, at the beginning. Therefore the goal of this article is to thoroughly acquaint the reader with various topics surrounding the basic functioning of MySQL.
